MET Guided Tours to the villages see: About the Area

CLOASTERF village - first mentioned in historical documents in 1322 -  lies 7 km to the south west of Saschiz and 1 km from the Brasov – Sighisoara road. The fortified church stands in the middle of the village on the east of the main street.

The Cloasterf Church of St. Nicholas received financial support for its construction from the Province of Sibiu in 1521 and was completed in 1524. At the same time a four cornered wall with 4 towers was built. Only three of the towers are still standing today. The bell-ringers house was built in the 19th century probably during the construction of the bell tower.

In 1788 the altar and the organ were set up by  the carpenter and painter Georg Rosler. The church had to be repaired after damage caused by an earthquake. The Baroque altar was made in 1716 by the painter Andreas Hermann from Sibiu. The central painting represents a crucifix; on both sides of the crucifix wooden are carvings of Peter and Paul. Late gothic benches dated 1532 are still preserved, bearing  coats of arms; others were made in 1688 and 1799.

Pulpit and pulpit crown contain elements of the Baroque style. The font is made up by two pieces: a reversed old stone font with Gothic symbols, and on top the new wooden font.

Trust work in 2007

Consolidation and repair continued on two more damaged fortification towers.

Trust Work in 2005 - 2006

During this year the courtyard walls of the fortification bastions were repaired or rebuilt. Repair to the drainage in and around the courtyard was also completed.

Trust work in 2004

Our British conservation trainer arrived in april to begin work in Cloasterf with four builders.

The Lutheran church has had 4 bastions repaired by the Trust, all of which have needed careful restoration work and stitching. One collapsed bastion has been completely rebuilt and we have also shored up the entrance beside the Bellringer's house which was leaning over dangerously.

Three facades in the main street have been completed and we have begun work on the oldest house in the village (made of wood) opposite the Orthodox church.

The large village school has had its windows mended as well as onsiderable interior repairs.

The Orthodox church at the top of the village has had its concrete removed from the exterior and repaired with lime mortar. The roof has also been repaired.

Trust work in 2003

We have restored facades of the houses No 21, No 62 and No 70.

The Bellringer's house was completely restored and filled with Saxon Furniture. We found a good iron stove from the village for the main room. The Landmark Trust chairman and Director visited it in June.  It was deemed perfect to have as a guest house.

Work in the Lutheran Church courtyard was completed, installing a new Buda (outside WC) and repairing the fortification walls and on one of the collapsed bastions.

Trust's work in 2002

  • Church gatehouse and Bell-ringers House have been restored. This required a complete rebuild of an entire house, 2 facades, re-roofing from scratch using traditional techniques, hand tools only and wooden pegs not nails; wooden boards hand copied from originals which were rotten; followed by plastering both outside facades. the intention is to use this lovely room as a guesthouse when completed.
